In a comparison of three leading
antivirus solutions, InfoWorld's Test Center selected Computer Associates' Inoculan as the top performer. In addition to its 100 percent effectiveness in detecting and eliminating all the viruses thrown at it in the test configuration, Inoculan also proved to be the easiest to deploy and manage.
The comparative review also included Intel's LANDesk and Dr. Solomon's Anti-Virus Toolkit.
According to InfoWorld's reviewer, Brooks Talley, CA's Inoculan "provided a winning combination of easy installation, comprehensive administration tools for both administrators and end-users, and near-perfect virus detection." Talley also cited Inoculan's full-featured client tools and Internet-based virus updates as key components of an effective enterprise virus protection strategy. Inoculan was also distinguished by its cross-platform effectiveness, protecting both NetWare and Windows NT environments with equal quality.
Talley was particularly enthusiastic about Inoculan's administrative features. "Some of the administration features we found invaluable were Inoculan's update process, real-time cure, and quarantine options," he wrote. "You can't help but be pleased with this solution's server detection capabilities. Inoculan detected and cleaned all of the viruses we put in its path. And the client portion of the product was in a class of its own, providing a large selection of options and a few extras, such as a rescue disk."
Inoculan's documentation and support also received high praise. "The Inoculan for NetWare Supervisor Guide and the User Guide for NT were detailed, graphical, and easy to follow," wrote Talley. "We especially liked the technology overview and detailed virus definitions. Our technical support calls to Computer Associates were answered quickly. Friendly technicians knowledgeably answered questions and resolved problems."
InfoWorld's testing emulated a 400-person network with a mix of NetWare and Windows NT split into two offices connected by a T1 line. The environment was attacked with 50 real-world viruses that included boot sector viruses, executable infectors and 15 macro viruses. Both client- and server-side detection were evaluated.
"The results of InfoWorld's test are very rewarding," said Yogesh Gupta, CA senior vice president of product strategy. "It's one thing to build software that can detect and eliminate viruses at all points of entry throughout a network, and it's another thing to make that solution easy to deploy in a heterogeneous enterprise computing environment. InfoWorld's review makes it clear that we have succeeded at both."
Gupta also noted that, as part of CA's Unicenter TNG solutions portfolio, Inoculan enables IT departments to deploy virus protection as part of an overall security management strategy. "Inoculan is uniquely positioned to provide any organization, regardless of its size or complexity, with a workable, effective virus protection architecture that integrates with all other aspects of network and systems administration."
Inoculan, and the integrated Unicenter TNG Advanced Antivirus Option are the premier antivirus solution for heterogeneous networks offering unmatched virus protection and centralized management. Exclusive features of Inoculan include real-time cure, universal manager, virus wall, virus quarantine, hands-free updates, extensive alerting options, Internet web browser integration and messaging protection. Inoculan is certified by the International Computer Security Association to detect 100% of viruses "in the wild" and helps to ensure that networks are protected against potentially damaging and costly virus incidents.
