Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) today announced that LAN Times magazine has rated CA's InocuLAN software the best choice for antivirus protection of network environments. The InocuLAN suite-the only solution evaluated that manages NetWare and Windows NT domains from the same utility-was chosen over products from McAfee Associates Inc., Symantec Corp., Trend Micro Inc., and five other manufacturers.
"When the tests were over, the McAfee Associates Inc. and Symantec Corp. software ended up at the bottom of the heap," said the magazine's editors. "The Cheyenne Division of Computer Associates International, Inc. came out on top."
In naming InocuLAN the top antivirus solution, the article cited its superior management capabilities, comprehensive collection of tools and utilities, complete set of clients and integration with CA's ARCserve. LAN Times evaluated InocuLAN for Windows NT, NetWare and common desktop environments.
LAN Times' Executive Summary Scorecard gave CA's InocuLAN an overall score of 4.4 out of a possible 5.0. Both McAfee and Symantec, with respective scores of 2.6 and 2.7, fell far behind. InocuLAN received either "excellent" or "good" ratings in every category considered - from ease-of-use, NetWare and Windows manageability, to interoperability and value. In contrast, McAfee and Symantec were given "poor" ratings in three of the five categories.
In fact, the editors reported a variety of problems while testing products from McAfee, determining that "McAfee's products aren't very manageable...Even though McAfee's antivirus utilities are certified to defend against and eliminate viruses, we don't see them as enterprise-grade tools."
Similar criticisms were leveled against Symantec's Norton AntiVirus: "We found the management utilities for Norton AntiVirus disappointing...The feature sets aren't consistent across platforms, and without management tools, we were left with a family of products that provides only the most basic virus protection."
Noting InocuLAN's complete set of antivirus clients, including software for Macintosh, OS/2, DOS and an array of Windows clients, editors described CA as the only vendor to treat virus protection as an "integral part" of the client kit.
They also cited InocuLAN's tight integration with ARCserve, saying that unlike other antivirus products, InocuLAN permits the backup to continue after catching a virus.
"If you're already using Cheyenne's ARCserve backup software, you can't lose by choosing InocuLAN - the products are designed to be aware of each other's activity," the editors wrote. "Even if you are using a competing product, it's difficult to make a case for implementing anything but InocuLAN as your antivirus solution."
Editors also praised the CA solution as offering "the best support for NetWare" of all the products tested. "It lets you manage your NetWare and NT antivirus domains within the same application. This can save you time managing your antivirus software, particularly if you have several machines running each NOS."
Because the CA software presents both management windows within one application, receiving and responding to reports is easier, according to LAN Times. This capability earned CA high marks in the magazine's interoperability and management testing categories.
"We are extremely proud that InocuLAN emerged from this important product comparison as the runaway leader," said T. M. Ravi, CA vice president of marketing. "In meeting or exceeding LAN Times' high expectations in all areas, InocuLAN has demonstrated its clear superiority. We thoroughly agree with the editors' recommendation to clients who need to protect dozens of servers and hundreds of users - avoid solutions such as McAfee and Symantec, which fall short in several essential areas, in favor of top-rated solutions like InocuLAN."
