Dr Solomon's Software, the worldwide leader in virus detection and repair, today acknowledged results of the University of Tampere's Antivirus Scanner Analysis study. This newly-released independent test shows Dr Solomon's as having the only virus scanner with a 100 percent detection rate under DOS, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.

In all test categories, Dr Solomon's products outperformed other major vendors on the market.

The University of Tampere in Finland is one of the top three academic research institutions in the computer virus field. Tampere conducted independent testing to judge the effectiveness of computer antivirus software. This is the third annual Antivirus Scanner Analysis study published by the company's Virus Research Unit, and Dr Solomon's has consistently achieved superior results.

"We're proud to receive confirmation for what we already know about our products: our virus detection is the best in the business. Our customers already know that," said Stephen Orenberg, senior vice president and general manager of Dr Solomon's North American operations.

"This is a perfect example of how a scientific virus test should be run," said Glenn Jordan, senior technology consultant, Dr Solomon's Software. "The testing protocol is fully documented for reproducibility, there are no `non-viruses' in the test sample, and all the viruses in the test set were selected based only on confirmed infection incidents."

The Test

The report presented results of an anti-virus scanner analysis carried out by the University's Virus Research Unit in the summer of 1996. The test used real, live PC viruses that were newly listed "in the wild," that is circulating among computer users, as of March 1996. The analysis includes tests of DOS command-line, DOS memory resident, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 scanners against the test set of viruses "in the wild."

The University's test compared results for Dr Solomon's Software's virus scanner, and scanners from McAfee, Symantec (Norton's), F-PROT, IBM, Microsoft and many others. Of the 13 scanners tested, only Dr Solomon's showed a 100 percent detection rate for DOS, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 "on-demand" scanners, for which the user invokes the virus scan via a DOS command line or Windows program. For DOS and Windows background scanners, which are memory resident and constantly monitor for viruses without user intervention, Dr Solomon's virus scanners were clearly superior versus the competition.
